Lots of great New Jazz Music being made including original compositions (Marquis Hill, Fast Citizens), covers of Lennon tunes (Ochipinti), Brazilian (Ben-Hur / Debriano collab), vocals (Sylvia Brooks), progressive large ensemble (Josh Berman), Organ Monk (YEA!)...and an appearance by San Diego's own Gilbert Castellanos (Donald Vega). RONI BEN-HUR / SANTI DEBRIANO – “OUR THING” (Guitarist and bassist,

joined by drummer Duduka de Foneseca, in a straight-ahead collection of originals and

brailizian tunes, plus a couple of standards).

JOSH BERMAN & HIS GANG – “THERE NOW” (Progressive octet, doing standards

and originals all arranged by the cornetist).

SYLVIA BROOKS – “RESTLESS” (Female vocalist, in a lavishly produced set, doing

mostly the Great American Songbook).

FRANK HERZBERG TRIO – “HANDMADE” (Bassist, leading a trio, doing mostly

straight-ahead originals).

MARQUIS HILL – “SOUNDS OF THE CITY” (Trumpeter, doing all originals, but one,

in a straight-ahead fashion, with a couple of spoken word interludes).

HOT CLUB OF DETROIT – “JUNCTION” (Gypsy-jazzers, doing a straight-ahead set,

with a strong French influence).

GREG LEWIS ORGAN MONK – “UWO IN THE BLACK” (Organist, leading a quartet,

doing a straight-ahead mix of Monk and originals).

FRED LONBERG-HOLM’S FAST CITIZENS – “GATHER” (Very progressive sextet,

doing all originals).

LOU MARINI – “STARMAKER” (Saxophonist, in a progressive, big band set).

MICHAEL OCCHIPINTI & SHINE ON – “THE UNIVERSE OF JOHN LENNON”

(Jazzy vocal takes on Lennon’s tunes). NOTE: TRACK 4 CONTAINS AND FCC-

UNFRIENDLY WORD…DO NOT AIR.

BOBBY SANABRIA BIG BAND – “MULTIVERS” (Edgy Latin grooves, with a couple

of spoken word tracks).

SHUFFLE DEMONS – “CLUSTER FUNK” (Mostly contemporary vocals, 5 tracks are

straight-ahead instrumentals, 4 of those progressive).

DONALD VEGA – “SPIRITUAL NATURE” (Pianist, leading a straight-ahead session

of jazz tunes and originals. San Diego’s Gilbert Castellanos appears).
