Lots of different New music this week being added to the Jazz 88 Music Library, including The Bad Plus (Jazz Live alums!) adding some electronics, new discs from pianists Cables and Mabern, progressive outings from McCaslin and Mazurek, and San Diego's own Danny Green's New One (interview soon?!), among others. THE BAD PLUS – “MADE POSSIBLE” ~ Entertainment One

(Trio’s eighth studio album made up of eight collective originals plus a tribute

track to Paul Motion. An energetic release with layers of synth and electronic

drum sounds that accompany the trio’s acoustic palette; avant-garde populism)!

ANDREA BRACHFELD – “LADY OF THE ISLAND” ~ Zoho

(Flautist, often rooted in Latin jazz, offers up a new date of mostly straight-ahead

jazz tunes. All cuts address the three basic elements found in most Western

music: rhythm, melody, and harmony).

GEORGE CABLES – “MY MUSE” ~ High Note

(One of the most in-demand session pianists/composers leads a trio doing a mix

of originals and other jazz tunes. The album expresses a number of jazz elements

ranging from post-bop to gospel-tingled blues).

DENISE DONATELLI – “SOUL SHADOWS” ~ Savant

(Los Angeles-based and Grammy nominated vocalist reuniting with her Music

Director / arranger / accompanist Geoffrey Keezer for their latest collaboration.

She offers a program of spacious, un-hackneyed tunes by Peter Eldridge, Sting,

Pomplamoose and others with Keezer providing the interesting arrangements and

scoring).

CHARLES GAYLE TRIO – “STREETS”CHARLES GAYLE TRIO – “STREETS” ~ Northern-Spy Records

(Blazing saxophonist leading an exhilarating free jazz trio. Title and cover photo

reflect on his own homeless days. This is a spiritual and heavy hitting session)!

DANNY GREEN – “A THOUSAND WAYS HOME” ~ Tapestry

(San Diego-based pianist and composer with his 2nd date leading his core quartet

with a few special guest appearances. A straight-ahead collection of all original

compositions & arrangements).

MARC JOHNSON / ELIANE ELIAS – “SWEPT AWAY” ~ ECM

(Collective date of originals between the double-bassist and pianist along with

Joey Baron and Joe Lovano. Melody-rich pieces that is sensual, poetic and

swinging).

HAROLD MABERN – “MR. LUCKY” ~ High Note

(Pianist, stepping into the spotlight as a leader on this recording that’s full of

driving energy. A quartet setting that includes an interesting repertoire of songs

associated with Sammy Davis Jr.).

ROB MAZUREK PULSAR QUARTET –“STELLAR PULSATIONS” ~Delmark

(Cornetist/improviser/composer/multi-media artist with the studio debut of his

new Pulsar Quartet, featuring members of the Exploding Star Orchestra. This is

mostly a progressive date that features all originals).

DONNY MCASLIN – “CASTING FOR GRAVITY” ~ Greenleaf Music

(Tenor saxophonist leads a quartet of all original modern creative music. Here, he

dips further into the waters of electro/acoustic music, expanding the jazz musical

audience. All originals.

RIVERS / HOLLAND / ALTSCHUL – “REUNION: LIVE IN NEW YORK” ~PI

(Legendary saxophonist whom passed away last year at the age of 89. A two-

disc release with his groundbreaking trio of Dave Holland and Barry Altschul that

was recorded live at the Miller Theatre at Columbia University in 2007. This trio

became the main vehicle for what what Rivers considered his main contribution to

the music: the exploration of “free-form” playing).
