Straight-ahead, original Jazz dominates the New Adds to the Jazz 88 Music Library this week, with some Fusion Pioneers (Jeff Lorber), Contemporary stars (Trombone Shorty), a Jazz Live San Diego alum (Julian Lage), and even some new local San Diego music (Matt Smith - who we'll chat with!) thrown in for seasoning! We'll debut all the New Monday 6-8 PM PT, September 2, 2013 on The New Jazz Thing @Jazz88 with Vince Outlaw. GLORIA ESTEFAN – “ THE STANDARDS” (Pop singer, admirably performing mostly The Great American Songbook).


MATTHEW FINCK/JONATHAN BALL PROJECT – “IT’S NOT THAT FAR” (Saxophonist and guitarist, leading a quartet/quintet, doing mostly straight-ahead originals).


KENNY GARRETT – “PUSHING THE WORLD AWAY” (Saxophonist, leading a variety of ensembles, doing edgy, straight-ahead originals, except for a couple).


FRED HERSCH/JULIAN LAGE – “FREE FLYING” (Pianist and guitarist, collaborating a duet project).


ART HOYLE QUINTET – “THE ART OF PERSUASION” (Chicago trumpeter, leading a quintet in straight-ahead standards and jazz tunes).


EUGENIE JONES – “BLACK LACE BLUE TEARS” (Female vocalist, in a nice, straight-ahead session of fresh tunes and standards).


JEFF LORBER FUSION – “HACIENDA” (Fusion pioneers, continuing the tradition, with some guest performances, as well).


MICHAEL ROSS –“GINGER” (Saxophonist, with a collection of originals, except for one).


JANIS SIEGEL – “NIGHTSONGS & LATE NIGHT INTERLUDES” (Manhattan Transfer vocalist, with another great outing).


MATT SMITH NEW JAZZ TRIO – “SHORTHANDED” (Locals, performing straight-ahead originals, except for one).


SPRINGDALE QUARTET – “HESIT” (Very edgy contemporary grooves).


TROMBONE SHORTY – “SAY THAT TO SAY THIS” (Trombonist/vocalist in a very edgy contemporary mostly vocal session).


BRADLEY WILLIAMS, ERIC HOCBERG AND JIM WIDLOWSKI – “3” (Pianist, leading a trio, performing all straight-ahead originals).
