End of the Fiscal Year Drive
Blog Name: Home Page NewsAuthor: San Diego's Jazz 88.3 Posted on: June 18, 2015
Every time you experience a live performance of Jazz, it’s an original. At Jazz 88.3, we like that originality. We are celebrating with a campaign to end our fiscal year on budget with some other San Diego originals. We’ve partnered with Rubio’s and Blind Lady Ale House, Tiger! Tiger! and Panama 66, for example, to thank donors who help us keep that fiscal needle in the  black with some tasty original San Diego gastronomic experiences. And we’ve culled some original audio experiences, too, including a new CD from Sue Palmer that hasn’t even been released yet!
Take a moment and go to our Support Jazz 88.3 page, and consider which San Diego Original you’d like to add to your collection.

B.B. King- 1925-2015
Blog Name: Home Page NewsAuthor: San Diego's Jazz 88.3 Posted on: May 15, 2015
Blues legend B.B. King passed away in his sleep on Thursday, May 14. B.B. was a nickname for "Blues Boy" and he definitely lived up to that monicker. B.B.'s playing style was so straight-forward yet so unique with his signature vibrato. He was quoted as saying "I wanted to connect my guitar to human emotions." As a frequent visitor of San Diego B.B. enjoyed playing venues like the Belly Up and House of Blues. He also was involved in charity work in San Diego as an ambassador for Photocharity, a non-profit that houses homeless youth. He would autograph guitars (that looked similar to his 'Lucille') and othe memorabilia that would be auctioned off for the benefit of the charity. His smile was infectious and his appeal crossed over many generations and genres of music. Rest in peace King.

Creative Music October 9, 2014 10pm - Midnight
Blog Name: Progressive NightsAuthor: San Diego's Jazz 88.3 Posted on: October 13, 2014
Generally speaking I'm slow to assemble a program. I'm open to suggestion from anywhere beforehand. But when it all comes into focus and the thoughts, pictures, and memories build a structures that is ready. I leave a window open, just in case.
  • Rambler is a fun tune by tuba master Bob Stewart. I'm so glad Arthur Blythe has included the lower register in so much of his work. Grandpa had a Rambler and it was something else entirely.
  • Ken Thomson is Who To Watch For. Out of the blue is this tune called Welding For Freedom and it justifies my strategy of leaving a window open. Win/win.
  • Nathan Hubbard collect SDMA for Best Jazz Album. There was a lot of texture in the eleven o'clock hour. Tons of great names contributing, and Nathan making it bubble. xlnt
Thanks for listening

3 Giant Losses for the Art Form, Daniel, Gerald and Joe
Blog Name: Home Page NewsAuthor: San Diego's Jazz 88.3 Posted on: September 15, 2014
The last few week's have provided major blows for Jazz.  We lost one of our very own here in San Diego (Daniel Jackson) but also Gerald Wilson and Joe Sample.  These men were integral to the art form as composers and arrangers.  Their trumpet and piano, respectively, lent to the honest voice of jazz music.  For Gerald, it began in the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra in 1939 when he replaced the star trumpeter in the group at the time (Sy Oliver). Joe's contribution started in hard bop and grew into many different styles of playing. Both men led bands and forged new roads. Their music and jazz history will preserve forever.
