Suenos: The Cinco de Mayo Show
Blog Name: Johnny D's Jazz JournalAuthor: John D'Agostino Posted on: April 30, 2014
The theme for the May 4, 2014 edition of Johnny D’s Jazz Journal is “Sueños: The Cinco de Mayo Show”. “Sueños” is Spanish for “dreams,” and in this case it refers to 19th-century Mexico’s dreams of freedom following centuries of domination by Spain and France; coincidentally, the word sueños also kept popping up in the titles of the songs I was auditioning for this show, so it became a recurring motive.

Like Jazz and Blues, nonprofit organizations were created by Americans, in America.  The music and the organizations sprang up with a spirit of kinship and mutual understanding. The music is an expression of the condition of life: what’s happening, why it seems to be happening, and what, (if anything), we can do about it.  giveBIG logoNonprofits sprang up in response to common needs, filling a gap where, depending on one’s point of view, government cannot, or should not, go; funding scientific research, or feeding the hungry, or making arts and culture available to entire communities.   Jazz and Blues - and nonprofit organizations of all types and sizes - serve the public good

And they are funded, for the most part, by the very people they serve, and their loved ones.

The interview with Nathan Hubbard went well for a high wire act, and all encompassing enough to obliterate any thought of Program Notes until Friday afternoon. Then it took another two days to get to it. So much for spontaneity.
    • Volume 4 of Encinitas And Everything After will be presented on Sunday, 4/27/14. Ogd_S(11) Translation Has Failed is a mobile unit and is fully accountable for processing Hubbard's ideas. Taoist Sanctuary, 4229 Park Blvd 92103. 8pm.
    • Klang is the James Falzone Quartet. They bring such energy and ability that I'm sure some promoter in town has an eye on them. Has to.
    • Between Bynum at the beginning and Cherry at the finish, Steve Lacy singlehandedly astounded the aural capabilities of man and machine. Gusts, in case you need to track it down.

Progressive Nights concludes with the subtle textures and captivating inventions in the particular style as curated every Thursday night by yours truly. This might sound like a generic phrase cooked up before a pressing deadline, but it's the real deal. Get into The Speakeasy and have a listen. Individual experience may vary each week, but this is a long term commitment and relevant within its context.
    1. Yes I played "Western Wren (A Bird Call)" again. It's a magical interaction between Jeff Ballard drums, Lionel Luoeke guitar, and Miguel Zenon saxophone. Found on Ballard's Time's Tales.
    2. Yes the Rosetta Trio piece might have seemed out of place after "Bloodcount." But what a transition to "Lena" and the majestic power of Cecil Taylor. Free Time!
    3. Yes Todd Sickafoose Tiny Resistors came to the rescue at the very last minute. What a great night. Special thanks to Mark and Kimi from Brooklyn.
    Thanks for listening.

O man. So involved with this show that Legal had to interoffice memo (as a verb) to remember Program Notes. It has not been uneventful.
    1. The shape of the first hour brings to mind that Liverpool is rolling and everyone else is hanging on, if that. Yeah, talking to you, Arsenal. But the shape, moving forward at every opportunity and asking questions, as they say. Questions need to be answered, or the answer will be provided. Trios expanding into sections and creative music...provides the answers.
    2. The second hour satisfied my basic parameters for Free Time. Something Must Happen. Almost always catches me looking the other way when the reaction is internal like physical/mental rather than perception or emotion. Anthem For The Moment by Dennis Gonzalez did that. Took the net away. Thanks man.
    3. John Scofield Uberjam Deux at UCSD Sunday night. check it
    Thanks for listening.

I could review the many ways that creative music and jazz are redundant or at least a hair split. Maybe another time, if necessary. The point is that within the realm there is a niche, a tributary, a tangent, that is of but not within what you might regularly experience on Jazz 88.3. For programming purposes I call it Creative Music. And it's snug in the Progressive Nights zone. Be sure to check The Speakeasy to hear this and many of the shows on Jazz 88.3.
    • Horace Tapscott, then "John Coltrane" from Mister Billy Higgins (ecd 22061-2). I'm in heaven.
    • Kendra Shank and John Stowell are coming to the Museum of Making Music on April 19th.
    • "Orange Outline" by Franz Kline."When I paint a picture, I don't know every line in advance, but I know in general what I'm about."
    • Free Time was as much about texture as it was about technique. One of those I have a feel for, the other I can appreciate.
    • Epistrophy, any way, shape, or form.

Blog Name: Progressive NightsAuthor: Miff Mole Posted on: March 27, 2014
Welcome to Progressive Nights, the dynamic programming direction in the late post meridian zone on Jazz 88.3 and jazz88.org. It seems like everyone is running from anything even vaguely approaching modern or avant garde...or Jazz, for that matter. Meanwhile, Jazz 88.3 is actually committing space and energy to current and historical developments in Modern Jazz Music. Monday through Thursday nights, 10pm to midnight. Progressive Nights.

This is Miff Mole and I'm going to real time bullet list my show for 3/27/14. Not everything, but enough to get a feel for what's going on.
    • Right now it's 9:47pm, Barry is playing The Rich and The Poor by Keith Jarrett. It is definitely setting a mood in my music brain program list.
    • Opened with guitarist Joel Harrison's String Choir, music by, or inspired by, Paul Motian. (footnote: two things at once ain't easy)
    • Bassist Keith Witty and drummer Damion Reid are a molten flow for the Jonathan Finlayson piece "Circus."
    • Omission of detail does not reflect any particular agenda or preference. Voice activated blog would be great until the on-air mic is mistakenly cued by the operator and comedy ensues.
    • Michael Formanek and Jim Black were dangerous on "Thin Skin/Dangerous Crustaceans."
    • "Voices" from Bill Dixon's Intents And Purposes is familiar and provocative at the same time. The focus and execution is staggering, but that's what creative music does. (footnote: something else that ain't easy)
    • Listen to the show at The Speakeasy. It will be there by Sunday.
    Peace

Jazz Education Network 2014 Conference Day 3
Blog Name: The New Jazz Thing with Vince OutlawAuthor: Vince Outlaw Posted on: January 11, 2014
As I rush off to experience Day 4 of the Jazz Education Network 2014 Annual Conference, aka #JEN14, in Dallas, here's some of the highlights of Day 3, Friday, January 10, 2014, as shared during the day on TNJT Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, Storify-like. From orienting Jazz 88 to JEN through attending Committee meetings, to cruizing the squeeking and squaking of the Exhibit all, I took in panels, adjudicated student sessions, and full blown concerts in lobbies! The day was capped off my the moving awards ceremony at the LeJENds of Jazz Education Gala Fundraiser and an evening of concerts that will be remembered forever. I am totally impressed by the JEN Board, Committees, and Presentors, but also the many volunteers, students, and Jazz fans taking part in this very well run conference. On to Day 4!!

The full story is after the split, but here's a slideshow of some shots from the day and a sample of the evening ending performance by vocal ensemble Groove For Thought...Enjoy!

Jazz Education Network Annual Conference 2014 Kicks Off In Dallas
Blog Name: The New Jazz Thing with Vince OutlawAuthor: Vince Outlaw Posted on: January 9, 2014
Jazz Education is the focus of the Jazz Education Network, but after arriving in Dallas and attending the opening day of the 5th JEN 2014 Annual Conference, hereafter known as JEN14, there is a whole lot more going on. The New Jazz Thing and San Diego's Jazz 88 is attending the conference to make some connections with this organization on a very similar mission to Jazz 88 and see how we can help them as they prepare for the 6th Annual Conference which will be help in our home port, San Diego (or as they jokingly pronounced it Ron Burgandy-style many times during the evening's performances "San Di-Ah-go"). Actually, the meat and potatoes of the event begins on Day 2 as clinics, presentations, committee meetings, and lots more student and professional musician performance really kick into gear. Day 1 was all about registering, introductions at the JEN Presidents Founders reception, and an evening of both formal and jam session music by very polished local Jazz ensembles.

Note: While I'm working out the kinks in posting to the Jazz 88 blog via mobile devices, you can follow along on Facebook with a 'Like' of The New Jazz Thing page http://Facebook.com/TheNewJazzThing, via TNJT Twitter at http://Twitter.com/TNJT, or follow the #JEN14 Hashtag on your favorite social media tracking app to hear the larger voice of the conference.

    • New Jazz Made This Week! I'm looking to start a new feature on TNJT where I play Jazz Made This Week and posted online somewhere it can be shared with others. Did you go into the studio and post something on Soundcloud? Did your band play a gig and there's a video up on YouTube? Where else should I be looking for Jazz Made This Week...BandCamp, Reverbnation, ...?
    • Jazzweek.com Year End Jazz Chart: 2013: The No. 1 CD on the Top 100 Jazz Chart for 2013 as reported by JazzWeek stations is Christian McBride Trio Out Here (Mack Avenue). During 2013, this release was reported during 24 weeks and accumulated 4,408 spins. It peaked at No. 1 for three consecutive weeks: Aug. 26, Sept. 2 and Sept. 9. Is this chart biased for releases early in 2013? What other things can we learn from this chart? Wasn't Gregory Porter at the top for 9 weeks, but only ranks #11?
    • 56th Grammy Awards For Jazz will be given out Sunday, January 26, 2014. We'll do a quick review of the nominees and feature some music too!
    • Leonard Patton was one of George Varga's 2014 Faces To Watch, so we'll get ready for his 2014 release with soimething by this former (and hopefully returning) TNJT guest!
    • SD Jazz Writer extraordinaire Robert Bush released his Top 10 SD Jazz Releases of 2013, so we'll dip into that list and see what we pull out!
    • Clarinetist and sometimes vocalist Bobby Gordon, who made his home in San Diego, passed away on December 31, 2013. He was also well known from his time on Riverwalk Jazz. We'll play something in his honor.
