Creative Music with Miff Mole 7/9/15
Blog Name: Progressive NightsAuthor: Miff Mole Posted on: July 9, 2015
I do not multi-task well. My multi-tasking is more stretched out linear-like, not stacked. Some might say it's not multi-tasking if it's not simultaneous but I would ask "how simultaneous does it have to be?" Right now E.S.T. is rolling "Still" from Leucocyte. This piece is certainly one mood of Free Time, but next is "Summer Song/Two/Evening" by Bill Dixon. Similar, but very different from each other. In the scope of things, there's going to be something around the corner that could change everything.

Mark Dresser Receives 2015 Doris Duke Impact Award
Blog Name: Jazz 88.3 BlogAuthor: Vince Outlaw , Social Media Marketing ManagerPosted on: June 30, 2015
San Diego Jazz Musician, Composer, Bandleader, Educator, and Innovator Mark Dresser has been named as one of 20 recipients of the Doris Duke Impact Awards for 2015, receiving $80,000 to be used over 3 years as he wishes. Since April 2014, the foundation has awarded a total of $3.2 million in Impact Awards to 40 artists in the fields of jazz, dance and theatre. The Doris Duke Impact Award, in particular, has a unique nomination process, as explained by Ben Cameron, program director for the arts at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, "The Doris Duke Impact Awards are based on nominations submitted by artists, identifying others (often less widely known) that will have enormous impact on the jazz, dance or theatre fields in the future.

Congratulations Mark Dresser! 2015 Doris Duke Impact Award Winner

Dresser’s reaction to the award, as captured by Robert Bush, San Diego Jazz Writer, in an NBC San Diego Blog Post, "I felt gratified being recognized by this organization and it’s especially meaningful to know that I was chosen by a panel made up of distinguished but unknown colleagues in the field. I’m still trying to get a handle on the implications of such a significant financial prize attached and continuing to figure out what that could mean in realizing my music on a more dimensional level."

End of the Fiscal Year Drive
Blog Name: Home Page NewsAuthor: San Diego's Jazz 88.3 Posted on: June 18, 2015
Every time you experience a live performance of Jazz, it’s an original. At Jazz 88.3, we like that originality. We are celebrating with a campaign to end our fiscal year on budget with some other San Diego originals. We’ve partnered with Rubio’s and Blind Lady Ale House, Tiger! Tiger! and Panama 66, for example, to thank donors who help us keep that fiscal needle in the  black with some tasty original San Diego gastronomic experiences. And we’ve culled some original audio experiences, too, including a new CD from Sue Palmer that hasn’t even been released yet!
Take a moment and go to our Support Jazz 88.3 page, and consider which San Diego Original you’d like to add to your collection.

Ornette Coleman rest in peace
Blog Name: Home Page NewsAuthor: San Diego's Jazz 88.3 Posted on: June 13, 2015
Ornette Coleman passed away on June 11, 2015. He was a composer and he played saxophone, trumpet, and violin. He is considered influential across all creative genres and In All Languages, as he titled a 1987 release. He will from here on be celebrated and remembered by those looking ahead to unlock musical secrets to intrigue us and enhance our lives.
Ornette Coleman 6/11/15
Blog Name: Progressive NightsAuthor: Miff Mole Posted on: June 11, 2015
Ornette Coleman was one of the modern innovators. He just passed away at the age of 85. Here are random notes as I rolled along.
  • Sound Grammar was one of his last recordings. I'm celebrating the music not hashing the details. Denardo Coleman on drums, Gregory Cohen and Tony Falanga on basses (plucked and bowed, respectively), and Ornette Coleman on alto sax, trumpet, and violin.
  • For me Sound Grammar presents the open aspect perfectly, four directions woven together into a super strong design
  • Charlie Haden, Jimmy Garrison, Scott LaFaro
  • Billy Higgins, Ed Blackwell, Denardo
  • Don Cherry, Dewey Redman (ps. Bobby Bradford)
  • Free Jazz, Harmolodics, Sound Grammar
  • Lot of random notes for those last points so dig this if you want to...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ornette_Coleman
thanks for listening...

ps. enco is beautiful

Young Jazz Lions Looking For A New Den
Blog Name: Jazz 88.3 BlogAuthor: Vince Outlaw , Social Media Marketing ManagerPosted on: June 4, 2015
Word came to Jazz 88.3 via Facebook from San Diego Jazz trumpter, band leader, educator, and entrepreneur Gilbert Castellanos...

Hello family & friends, I am sad to say that the month of June will be the last month for the Young Lions series at Croce's Park West. I want to thank the people who came out on Wednesday nights to support the young musicians. I am proud of the young talented musicians for the work they put into promoting their night, preparing and rehearsing music for their sets, and showing true professionalism on stage. This is really where my passion and heart and soul is, watching these young adults blossom into amazing musicians! I also want to thank Ingrid Croce and Jimmy Rock for giving us a home to perform for the last 16 months. I DO NOT want this to be the end of the young lion series! It's crucial that we keep this going for the future of jazz in San Diego! As of today, I am searching for a new home for the series! I would love to get the program back on it's feet by July! Please feel free to inbox me if you would like to share your thoughts/suggestions!

Keep jazz alive!!!

With love and respect,

Gil

Gilbert estimates that there have been over 200 young musicians that have played for the series, with 80% of them still in high school. The evening usually draws a big crowd with standing room only being not uncommon. Gilbert's goal is to "find a venue that can guarantee the young musicians a fee" in order to keep the evening free and "really pack the joint!" According to Gilbert, the lions have been doing a "great job" promoting their nights on the bandstand.

Jazz 88.3 is helping to get this search underway with this blog post, but this is an opportunity that will take the community of business leaders, art directors and presenters, music educators to move forward AND ESPECIALLY the support of Jazz, Music, Education, and Art Lovers and Supporters dedicating themselves to go and see and hear and exhort The Future of Jazz forward to do as Gilbert says, KEEP JAZZ ALIVE, at whatever home these Young Lions find next.

If you have ideas for a venue to keep the Young Lions series alive, contact Gillbert Castellanos via email at Gilbertc1972@aol.com, his personal Facebook page or the Gilbert Castellanos Music Facebook Fan Page (and give it a "Like" too ;)

A recent addition to the Mole Programming Portfolio is the refreshing Progressive Nights: Friday Vibe. Somehow relaxed compared to Free Time, Thursday at 10pm, there is still the same appreciation of the form but the shape is different. Friday Vibe at 10pm
B.B. King- 1925-2015

Blues legend B.B. King passed away in his sleep on Thursday, May 14. B.B. was a nickname for "Blues Boy" and he definitely lived up to that monicker. B.B.'s playing style was so straight-forward yet so unique with his signature vibrato. He was quoted as saying "I wanted to connect my guitar to human emotions." As a frequent visitor of San Diego B.B. enjoyed playing venues like the Belly Up and House of Blues. He also was involved in charity work in San Diego as an ambassador for Photocharity, a non-profit that houses homeless youth. He would autograph guitars (that looked similar to his 'Lucille') and othe memorabilia that would be auctioned off for the benefit of the charity. His smile was infectious and his appeal crossed over many generations and genres of music. Rest in peace King.

Clearly I'm no correspondent. Too long since the last entry is one way to look at it. Lucky to be standing is the dramatic way to look at it. New studio and delivery system has everything going sideways but forward. Muscle memory disruption is like learning to walk, or is it complacency crumbling away from decades status quo? Hey man, it's a computer.
