George Varga

George Varga, the veteran pop music critic for the San Diego Union-Tribune and SignOnSanDiego.com, was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and grew up in Hawaii and Frankfurt, Germany.  He began writing for the San Diego Union in 1982, starting with a review of a Jaco Pastorius concert at the Bacchanal, and has been the Union-Tribune's pop music critic since 1988. Varga is also a contributing writer for Jazz Times magazine and has written for Billboard, Spin and other publications.  In 2002, he created and taught the UCSD Extension course, “Jazz in a Post-Ken-Burns World.
