THE COMMANDERS: USAF BAND OF THE GOLDEN WEST – “FOE DESTROYER” (Great big band jazz from KAHIL EL’ZABAR’S RITUAL TRIO – “FOLLOW THE SUN” (Percussionist and chairman of the AACM, presents an Afro-Cuban/free jazz collection of originals and covers featuring vocalist Dwight Trible). BEN FLOCKS – “BATTLE MOUNTAIN” (Saxophonist in a quintet setting with a collection of lyrical and deep-grooved originals). JEFF HACKWORTH – “SOUL TO GO!” (Saxophonist, backed by a classic organ trio, doing straight-ahead standards, STACEY KENT – “THE CHANGING LIGHTS” (Female vocalist, with an international mix of songs). TAKUYA KURODA – “RISING SON” (Trumpeter doing contemporary, funk grooves this time). JAMES BRANDON LEWIS – “DIVINE TRAVELS” (Saxophonist, leads an all-star trio with a spiritually infused session of bluesy free jazz). SARAH MANNING – “HARMONIOUS CREATURE” (Saxophonist, leading a quintet, in a progressive collection of PAT METHENY UNITY GROUP – “KIN” (Guitarist playing with an all-star quintet (an extension of his 2012 quartet), featuring more accessible modern jazz tunes than his two previous dates). JIM OLSEN ENSEMBLE – “WE SEE STARS” (Flutist/composer/arranger, leading a large ensemble in an edgy ERNESTO OVIEDO AND THE JOHN SANTOS SEXTET – “SIEMPRE CLASICO” (Male vocalist, singing in Spanish). CHRIS PARKER – “FULL CIRCLE” (Pianist, leading a quintet with sax and violin, performing straight-ahead RUDY ROYSTEN – “303” (Drummer, leads a septet of NY musicians performing low-key, in-the-pocket grooves to aggressive full-bodied originals). JUMAANE SMITH – “I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU” (Trumpeter/vocalist, who has performed with Rashied Ali and The Clayton Brothers, backed by strings, with guest vocalist, doing a collection of familiar tunes). DAVE STRYKER- “EIGHT TRACK” (Guitarist, leading a quartet, in great, straight-ahead versions of new standards). SEAN SULLIVAN – “HEREAFTER” (Male vocalist, doing a mix of tunes). TRIO SHALVA – “BREEZE” (Straight-ahead jazz, with a middle-eastern flair). ERIC VAN ARO – “OBSESSION” (Male vocalist, doing a straight-ahead, interesting mix of tunes). FRANK WESS – “MAGIC 201” (Last recording by this legend).
