BEAT FUNKTION – “MANDY’S SECRET” (Do Music) (Ultra-funky all Swedish jazz-funk sextet paying homage to instrumental early 70’s funk, groove, soul, disco and afro-beat jazz). ANDY BEY – “PAGES FROM AN IMAGINARY LIFE” (Savant) (Pianist/vocalist, with a solo collection of originals and some fresh readings of standards). DEE DANIELS – “INTIMATE CONVERSATIONS” (Origin) (Vocalist pairing in duos and trios with eight giants of the music that include Russell Malone, Houston Person, and Cyrus Chestnut, performing a set of ten songs featuring classics and pop hits). SAMMY FIGUEROA & GLAUCIA NASSER – “TALISMAN” (Savant) (Latin jazz percussionist/double-Grammy nominee together with a Brazilian singer-songwriter creating a sound that incorporates Uruguayan candombe, Puerto Rican bamba, Cuban bata, and carnival samba). “LARRY FULLER” (Capri) (Pianist, whom was the last pianist for the Ray Brown trio, now brings a self-titled release for an in-the-pocket ensemble of full-out swing and high-spirited romps). HAL GALPER TRIO – “O’s TIME” (Origin) (Pianist incorporating his development of “Rubato” playing as his trio made up of Jeff Johnson’s bass and John Bishop’s (Origin Records founder) drums explore standards and jazz classics. Hal Galper Trio will be playing Jazz Live Nov. 18th). GERRY GIBBS THRASHER DREAM TRIO – “WE’RE BACK” (WCS) (Drummer, celebrating and exploring the Motown songbook alongside NEA Jazz Master Ron Carter and Kenny Barron). CHARLES LLOYD – “MANHATTAN STORIES” (Resonance) (Saxophonist/flautist with a 2-disc live set capturing two 1965 New York concerts recorded at Judson Hall & Slugs, featuring the quartet of Gabor Szabo, Ron Carter and Pete La Roca).
HAFEZ MODIRZADEH – “IN CONVERGANCE LIBERATION” (PI) (Multi-reed player/composer with seven chamber works that explores disparate elements such as Persian and Iberian scale structures, Andalucían poetry, Iraqi maqam practice, as well as the classical string quartet tradition). ALEX MERCADO TRIO – “SYMBIOSIS” (Conaculta/Fonca) (Mexican pianist with a new trio album which includes Scott Colley and Antonio Sanchez for a cohesive program of 10 modern mainstream originals). JASON MORAN – “ALL RISE: A Joyful Elegy For Fats Waller” (Blue Note) (Pianist with a tribute album translating pieces by or associated with Thomas “Fats” Waller into the language of modern tunes. Moran plays little stride piano, but his motivation here was to capture Fats Waller’s general energy – both the mad swing and comic persona – than his particular method of playing keys). JOHN DAVID SIMON – “PHANTASM” (WarmGroove) (New York tenor saxophonist with his latest offering of a B-3 organ/drum trio featuring originals alongside a variety of his favorite chosen tunes). TIERNEY SUTTON – “PARIS SESSIONS” (BFM) (Vocalist paring with guitar and bass guitar in a setting of duos and trios for a collection of romantic standards and three originals by French guitarist Serge Merlaud). TRIO 3 & VIJAY IYER – “WIRING” (Intakt) (Three ‘heavy weights’ of American Jazz Oliver Lake, Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille, with added pianist Vijay Iyer, for a collaboration formed to centralize the member’s creative energies and to promote organic improvisation). CHRIS WALDEN BIG BAND – “FULL-ON!” (Origin) (Five-time Grammy nominated, German-born composer/arranger/conductor returning for a 5th recording of his vibrant and swinging Big Band made up L.A. session players featuring numerous guest vocalists).
