BREAK (After Tune 1): Show Intro, Hour 1 Intro, Blog Post and Social Media Promo

10/10/17  00:10 AM - Gregory Porter - Take Me To The Alley - Blue Note - Fan The Flames

  • IN CONCERT - An Evening with Gregory Porter - Mark your calendars, because legendary vocalist, Gregory Porter will grace Balboa Theatre, Friday, November 3rd at 8PM. An artist whose music is at once timeless yet utterly of its time, Gregory Porter solidified his standing as his generation’s most soulful jazz singer-songwriter with the release of Take Me to the Alley, the much-anticipated follow-up to his million-selling Grammy-winning 2013 Blue Note debut Liquid Spirit. This is one spectacular show you simply won't want to miss! To purchase tickets, click here!

  • Take Me To The Alley (AllMusic.com, Thom Jurek): “ "Fan the Flames" is a swinging political post-bop finger-popper with punchy horns. It's an anthemic call to arms with great solos by Pennicott and Keyon Harrold.  "Fan the Flames" is a swinging political post-bop finger-popper with punchy horns. It's an anthemic call to arms with great solos by Pennicott and Keyon Harrold.

10/10/17  00:14 AM - Walt Weiskopf - Fountain of Youth - Posi-Tone Records - Loose Lips

  • NEW RELEASE Walt Weiskopf – Fountain Of Youth (2017) (Something Else Reviews, S Victor Aaron):  “Loose Lips” is an up-tempo number that’s percolates to perfections thanks to a taut rhythm section; Weiskopf throws out a lot of notes and makes every one of them count.”

  • “The title of his sixteenth one, Fountain Of Youth (now out via Posi-Tone Records) could just as well be referencing the youthful energy this jazz multitasker must have to pull it all off without missing a beat. Fountain Of Youth has the energy and enthusiasm of someone striving to make his mark, but with the discernment of the accomplished veteran that Weiskopf is.”

10/10/17  00:23 AM - Thelonious Monk - Plays Duke Ellington - Riverside - I Let a Song go Out of My Heart

  • Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington [Wikipedia]: “The concept of the album was the result of a compromise between Monk and his new label. Although Monk occasionally performed covers, he primarily played his own compositions and he had recorded several albums of originals during 1953-54 for his previous label Prestige Records. However, there was a perception (particularly among music critics) that Monk's own music was "too difficult" for the mainstream record-buying public, and his Prestige albums sold poorly.

10/10/17  00:58 AM - Johnny O'Neal - In The Moment - Smoke Sessions - Sweet Monk

  • BIRTHDAY (Tuesday) October 10 - Johnny O'Neal 10/10/1956 100 [Piano] Detroit, MI

  • “One of those is “Sweet Monk,” the album’s aptly named opening track. Bolstered by the darting horns of Hargrove and Stewart, the piece combines the off-kilter angularity of Thelonious Monk’s compositions with an inviting, sweet-natured charm that’s all O’Neal. Its bookend is the sun-and-sand brightness of “Tropical Breeze,” the lilting tune that closes the album.” (DL Media Press Release)

Hour 2

10/10/17  01:02 AM - Woody Shaw / Louis Hayes - The Tour, Volume Two - Highnote Records - 'Round Midnight

  • NEW RELEASE Woody Shaw: The Tour Vol. 2 (Jazz Wax, Marc Myers, September 2017): “In July 2016, I posted about a previously unreleased live album by the Louis Hayes-Junior Cook Quintet featuring Woody Shaw. It was recorded in Stuttgart, Germany, on March 22, 1976. The excellent album was entitled The Tour: Volume One, which, of course, teased the promise of subsequent installments. Well, that day has arrived. The Tour: Volume Two recently was released, and it's even better than the first, if that's possible.:

BREAK (After Tune 1): Hour 2 Intro, Hour 1 Final Tune, Blog Post and Social Media Promo

10/10/17  01:14 AM - Oscar Brown Jr. - Sin & Soul ...and then some - Columbia - Dat Dere

  • BIRTHDAY (Tuesday) October 10 - Oscar Brown Jr. 10/10/1926 100 [Vocals-Lead] Singer/Songwriter Chicago, IL 2005

  • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Brown Sin & Soul is also significant because Brown took several popular jazz instrumentals and combined them with self-penned lyrics on songs such as "Dat Dere", "Afro Blue" and "Work Song". This began a trend that would continue with several other major jazz vocalists. Several of the tracks from Sin & Soul were embraced by the 1960s Mod movement, such as "Humdrum Blues",[4] "Work Song" and "Watermelon Man".

    • Sin & Soul was followed by Between Heaven and Hell (1962). The success of Sin & Soul meant that much more money was spent on production and Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns were bought in to handle the arrangements.

10/10/17  01:17 AM - Russell Bizzett - Dream Street - Russell Bizzett - If I Were A Bell

  • The Joshua White Trio plays Monk - The Fall Membership Campaign will be October 10th through the 22nd. 10/10/17  01:30 AM - Yelena Eckemoff - In The Shadow Of A Cloud - L&H Production - Waters Of Tsna River

  • NEW RELEASE - In The Shadow of a Cloud (AllAboutJazz.com, John Kelman): “With Potter's flute work floating over Eckemoff's delicate accompaniment, Cleaver's gossamer cymbal work and a contrasting line doubled by Rogers and Gress, there's an unmistakable sense of flow that evokes the image of "Waters of Tsna River," even if but a few have actually visited this waterway that was particularly significant in medieval Russia, as a connection between the Baltic Sea and Caspian Sea basins via the Tvertsa River.

BREAK: Jazz and Blues Birthdays and On This Day Milestones, October 10 through October 16

10/10/17  01:43 AM - Coleman Hawkins - April In Paris - Bluebird - Body and Soul

  • ON THIS DAY #OTD (Wednesday) October 11 - Coleman Hawkins records "Body & Soul" for Bluebird records in 1939.

  • The NPR 100 'Body And Soul': “Hawkins' "Body and Soul" replaced blues-based riffing with brisk arpeggios, sharp-cornered phrases and endless lines that were the jazz equivalent of run-on sentences. He danced at the upper extremes of chords, foreshadowing the altered harmonies that later were so important to bebop. But he was hardly academic. His spry, seductive tone gave every phrase an unmistakable passion.”

10/10/17  01:46 AM - Dave Holland - Triplicate - ECM - Take the Coltrane

  • IN CONCERT - "CrossCurrents" at LJMS - Jazz 88.3 is proud to support La Jolla Music Society as they present: CrossCurrents. Joining the duo onstage is acclaimed saxophone player Chris Potter and renowned composer/vocalist Shankar Mahadevan. The show takes place Sunday, October 29th at 8PM at Balboa Theatre in the heart of downtown. For more information, or to purchase tickets, simply click here!

BREAK (Before Last Tune of Show): Blog and Social Media Promo, Jazz 88.3 Speakeasy Replay

10/10/17  01:54 AM - Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners - Riverside Records - Bemsha Swing

  • My favourite album: Brilliant Corners by Thelonious Monk (Guardian, John Fordham): “Brilliant Corners, recorded for the Riverside label in 1956 with an A-list band including saxophonist Sonny Rollins and former Charlie Parker drummer Max Roach, was the most compositionally ambitious session in the former church pianist's decade-long jazz career thus far.” “Arriving just before the late-50s free-jazz upheavals of Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor, this was music that showed just how powerfully song-form harmonies and the tempered scale could be wrenched into new shapes.Arriving just before the late-50s free-jazz upheavals of Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor, this was music that showed just how powerfully song-form harmonies and the tempered scale could be wrenched into new shapes.”
