Annotated Playlist for Jazz In The Night Wednesday March 11 2020
Hour 1
0:00 AM Duke Ellington “The Shepherd” — Bigbands Live: Duke Ellington Orchestra
Mercer Ellington [Band Leader] [Trumpet] 03/11/1919 Washington D.C. 1996
“During the ASCAP strike of the early '40s when Duke was desperate for new material, Mercer wrote several notable songs, including "Things Ain't What They Used to Be," "Jumpin' Punkins," "Moon Mist," and "Blue Serge," [Mercer Ellington, Artist Biography by Scott Yanow]
“Mercer was always eager to win his father's affection, and he quickly discovered that music was the way to his father's heart: if Duke were expected home at 4, Mercer would sit down at the piano at 10 minutes to 4 and begin playing, in hopes that his father would stop and listen.” [Life As Ellington's Son Was Mostly 'Mood Indigo', Michiko Kakutani, 1981, New York Times Archive]
BREAK (After Tune 1): Hour 1 Intro, Blog Post and Social Media Promo
0:11 AM Jeremy Pelt “Little Girl Blue” — The Art Of Intimacy, Vol 1
"...he shifts gears yet again, settling into a drummerless trio format on a warmly attenuated set of ballads. The album is stark contrast to his ambitious 2019 effort, The Artist, which found him drawing inspiration from the sculptures of Auguste Rodin. Where that album showcased his ear for harmonically expansive post-bop in the vein of Woody Shaw, here he strips his approach down to the essentials." [The Art of Intimacy, Vol. 1 - Jeremy Pelt, Matt Collar, AllMusic]
