|Duke Ellington's 117th birthday was celebrated with a special film presentation and a concert by the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SDSCPA) Jazz Ensemble on Friday, April 29, 2016 at San Diego City College's Saville Theater. The event was a special celebration as it was a final performance by the SDSCPA Jazz Ensemble as they prepare to represent San Diego as 1 of only 15 ensembles in North America to compete in the Essentially Ellington competition in New York City, May 5-7, 2016. |

|Some of the best of San Diego Jazz, including The Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio, Euphoria Brass Band, and Gilbert Castellanos will be featured at Jazz On Tap, Saturday, April 30, 2016, a benefit for Water For People, a charity working to bring safe drinking water and sanitation to developing countries around the world. Matt Smith and Euphoria's Drew Miller (also host of Jazz 88.3's Second Line Parade, Saturday 7-8pm PT) dropped by Afternoon Jazz with Claudia on Friday, April 29, 2016 to chat about the event and the state of San Diego Jazz. Hear San Diego Jazz history being made when an all-star band recreated the music of Barney Kessel's "Some Like It Hot" in the ballroom at the Hotel Del Coronado on Saturday, March 12, 2016. The inaugural concert in the San Diego Jazz Heritage Series presented by KSDS-FM, San Diego's Jazz 88.3 included dinner and a panel discussion led by Jazz 88.3 Station Manager and Los Angeles Jazz Institute Founder Ken Poston and featuring Gene Cipriano, multi-decade veteran of the Hollywood film industry and the man who "ghosted" the saxophone parts played by Tony Curtis in the movie "Some Like It Hot" which was filmed at the same Hotel Del in 1959.
The band for the event included Larry Koonse (g), Gene Cipriano (reeds), Carl Saunders (trumpet), Christian Jacob (piano), Darek Oles (bass), Kendall Kay (drums).
