Blog Name: One WorldAuthor: Marcus Rosario Posted on: December 30, 2012

There's been A TON of amazing music that's come out this past year from all over the world and I've been fortunate enough to share as much I could of it on One World. As 2012 comes to a close, I wanted to round out some of my favorite releases that I played a lot of as a result. This is in no particular order!

The unique guitar, bass, and tap percussion trio that is San Diego's own Besos de Coco (Lorraine Castellanos, Evona Wascinski, and Claudia Gomez, respectively) will be chatting and (space and technology willing) performing LIVE in Hour 2 of The New Jazz Thing on Monday, December 17 2012, 6-8 PM PT. They are performing a special Holiday show on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Dizzy's @ San Diego Jet Ski Rentals, so we will be chatting about that, how they got together, and their plans for the future. And we will hopefully be hearing them perform from the cozy confines of Jazz 88's On-Air Booth and Master Control, marshaled for the event! Some links about the band, previous performances, and the Dizzy's gig after the split, but here is the band performing "Tango en Skai"...

Houston Person, one of the most successful Jazz musicians working today and current #1 on the Jazzweek Jazz Charts with his latest release "Naturally", will be our guest in Hour 1 of The New Jazz Thing, Monday December 17, 2012, 6-8 PM PT! Houston was our guest at Jazz Live back in April, 2006 when we did a remote from Jazz In The Park at Balboa Park (thanks to Holly Hoffman) and it will be great to catch up with him as he's had a string of great successes since then! There are some reviews and other links after the split, but to get you in the mood, here's Houston playing Dizzy's Coca Cola in NYC in August 2012. Can't wait!

The Vote is IN!
Blog Name: Riffs on RadioAuthor: Ann Bauer Posted on: December 11, 2012
Jazz is Presidential!  Research about the neuro functionality of the brain as it absorbs, understands and relates to music is exploding.  Technology is now able to identify the exact areas of the brain where these processes take place, and we understand that music ignites at least seven different areas of the brain.  A preeminent scientist in this field is Daniel Levitin, the author of This is Your Brain on Music.   He is a former musician/producer/turned neuroscientist, so he's got a 360-degree point of view about music in general.  And his passion is clear in all his work.
