The confluence of cultural influences that constitute jazz’s foundations could only have happened in 20th century America…but in the decades since that musical big bang, jazz has become both an enduring American export AND one that’s become a unique showcase for overlapping ethnic, regional, national, and transnational musical aesthetics and traditions.
Sport and athletic competition has evolved in much the same way. The games that became national pastimes have grown to forge global communities. In light of this year’s Winter Olympic Games, we thought we’d celebrate the global nature of the pastime we’re most passionate about — jazz — with just a twist of healthy competition.
Beginning Wed., Feb. 4th, two days before the Milan-Cortina games' opening ceremony, KSDS will commence, with less fanfare but equal enthusiasm, our very own Winter 2026 Jazz OIympiad. Each weekday throughout the month of February, we’ll pick two different countries and highlight their respective contributions to the jazz ecosystem. And then we’ll ask YOU to make a music lover’s Sophie’s Choice. It’s kinda like who wore it better, but in this case it’s more like who played it better.
At the end of our global tournament, we’ll declare a quote-unquote winner…but it’s really less about winning and losing and more about how all these great musicians around the world play the same game…differently. Expect internationally themed prizes, raffles, and giveaways — and, of course, the best music and greatest musicians the world has to offer.
It’s jazz international style all month long on KSDS Jazz 88.3 FM in San Diego and all around the world at jazz88.org and on the KSDS mobile app.
