Federal Funding for Public Radio: A Potential Threat to KSDS Jazz 88
KSDS Jazz 88, San Diego’s only full-time straight-ahead jazz station, is closely monitoring developments out of Washington, D.C. that could affect the future of public broadcasting. President Trump signed an executive order directing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the agency that helps support more than 1,500 public radio and TV stations across the country, including KSDS. The House of Representatives has passed the measure, and it now moves to the Senate for final approval.
Why This Matters
While most of KSDS’s funding comes from local listener contributions and community partnerships, federal support helps fill critical gaps. CPB funds allow us to:
- Maintain our aging broadcast infrastructure,
- Provide educational and cultural programming,
- Preserve free access to jazz for all San Diegans and listeners around the world
Without this funding, our ability to serve the community could be at risk.
What You Can Do
Urgent action is needed now. The Senate has until July 18 to make its decision. Make your voice heard - public awareness and advocacy are essential in ensuring Congress understands how vital public media is to our democracy and our culture.
Here’s how you can help:
- Contact your elected officials: Let your Senators know what KSDS and public radio mean to you.
- Support KSDS Locally: Become a member or renew your contribution. Your local support ensures we remain strong, no matter what happens in Washington.
- Stay Informed and Vocal: Reach out to your elected officials. Let them know that funding public media is important to you.
- Share This Message: Help spread the word that federal funding for public media is under discussion—and public input matters.
