Dave Drexler's "Inside Art" has done it again, earning yet another win at last week's (Oct. 28) 52nd annual San Diego Press Club Excellence in Journalism Awards.
This marks the third consecutive year in which “Inside Art” has claimed a first-place prize in the San Diego Press Club’s Radio/Podcast category, including a 2024 “Best of Show” award.
Where past awards have either underscored "Inside Art's" distinguished standing among the market's interview-centered programs or spoken to the show's all-around excellence across broadcasting's core competencies, this year's focuses its praise on a more technical aspect of Drexler's craft. "Inside Art's" end-of-year special, "2024: In Remembrance," an anthology of Drexler's past interviews with notable artists and musicians to have died in 2024 — Benny Golson, Sérgio Mendes, Zakir Hussain, and Nikki Giovanni — was singled out for excellence in audio editing, with judges noting that "[Drexler] did a great job weaving music and interviews in and out throughout the program."
We, as Dave's peers and colleagues, could not agree more enthusiastically with this recognition. Every episode of "Inside Art" reflects a commitment to quality, precision, and professionalism. His attention to detail and commitment to accuracy is exceptional. His knowledge of and reverence for the history of the artistic forms he covers goes without saying, but he's no dogmatist. He's a journalist in the classical sense, but even after 51 years in broadcast journalism, he remains acutely attuned to that which is of cultural significance right now.
If you're an artist of any medium, doing noteworthy work — whether you're based here in San Diego or just passing through to dazzle local audiences with your craft — Dave will find you. His tastes are omnivorous in the best way, and "Inside Art" is comprehensive (and, at just 30 min., succinct) in the best way.
"My sincerest thanks and gratitude for your support of what this show has tried to accomplish over the years," Drexler told colleagues last week, "[which is] making public service and arts programming both meaningful and entertaining to listeners on a weekly basis."
