Jazz Olympiad Round Two: Italy vs. The Netherlands

Fun fact: Amsterdam actually has more canals than Venice. Does it have better jazz, too? You decide!

It’s Thursday, Feb. 19, and we’ve got more winners-bracket action for you from the inaugural KSDS Jazz Olympiad. Today, it’s a clash between legendary cultures of seafaring exploration. It’s the Italians versus the Dutch.

The Italians have legends like trumpeter Enrico Rava and saxophonist Gianni Basso and serve it arrabbiata with younger flamethrowers like guitarist Pasquale Grasso and saxophonist Stefano di Battista.

BUT, the Dutch lay claim to the Metropole Orkest, the world’s largest jazz orchestra, and contemporary masters like bassist Joris Teepe, Django-influenced guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg, and a pianist meant for a life in music named Peter Beets.

So between Italy and the Netherlands, the question now is: who beats whom?
