Ray Brown, bassist extraordinaire in both mainstream and be-bop styles, met and played with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie on his first day in New York in 1945, having been born (October 13, 1926) and grown up in Pittsburgh, PA. The famous Ray Brown Trio included, among other pianists, San Diego's own Geoffrey Keezer! You'll be hearing from this fantastic leader, accompanist, and mentor all week on San Diego's Jazz 88.3!

Art Blakey, an innovator for many styles of music and whose bands gave us several generations of Jazz greats, is the Jazz 88 Artist of the Week starting October 6, 2014. He was born October 11, 1919 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. You'll be hearing his music all week at Jazz 88.3.

Otis Williams and Janine Harty will be there to present the Blues and Jazz awards, appropriately. One of the first innovators on the bass during the be-bop era, Oscar Pettiford is San Diego's Jazz 88.3 Artist of the Week for the week of September 29, 2014. You'll be hearing his music all week at Jazz 88.3 and he will be the feature during the Noon PT Portrait in Jazz feature on the 92nd Anniversary of his birth in Okmulgee, OK, September 30, 1922. He passed away at the age of 37 in Copenhagen, Denmark on September 8, 1960.

Jazz 88.3 is proud to support the International Academy of Jazz-San Diego - a 501c3, non-profit, and the first, and only, September-May after-school instrumental and vocal Jazz program for kids! The IAJ-SD will kick-off the 2014 season THIS Saturday, September 27th at Grossmont College at 10AM. This event is open to the public and will be both an initiation event for currently registered students, as well as an informational event for kids and their parents who are interested in the program and are not yet registered. Light refreshments will also be served. So come out and show your support and help keep San Diego kids musically-inspired! |
