Today marks the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane's passing. To cap off the day we are screening a special film presentation about Coltrane the Saville Theatre for our current Jazz88 members. Acclaimed Bassist Darek Oles brings a super group in to the Saville Theatre for our next Jazz Live TONIGHT. The concert will focus on the music of John Coltrane as this week we recognize the 50th anniversary of the great saxophonist's passing. One of the most prolific and prominent bebop altoists on the West Coast Jazz Scene, Lanny Morgan, will be coming to Jazz LiveTONIGHT. Morgan first came to prominence in New York, as the young lead alto for Maynard Ferguson's Big Band of the sixties, as well as Maynard's sextet of the same era. Mark your calendars because The Bad Plus will hit the Music Box stage, Monday, May 1st at 8PM! The Bad Plus is a collective made up of bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King. All three are from the Midwest and they have known each other since their teens. Nonetheless, with the exception of one unimpressive meeting in 1990, it is only after spending their formative 20s apart -- King as a session player in Los Angeles, Iverson as the musical director for the Mark Morris Dance Group, Anderson as a prominent up-and-coming player on the New York jazz scene -- that they reunited in late 2000 to play a weekend club date in Minneapolis. The chemistry was immediate and obvious. They planned a second gig and a one-day recording session for the indie jazz label Fresh Sound and The Bad Plus was born! To purchase tickets, click here!

The 7th Annual Parker Summer Jazz Workshop, in partnership with Jazz 88.3 and San Diego’s House of Blues®, offers middle and high school students an opportunity to study and play music with professional jazz musicians while learning performance skills, improvisation, jazz theory and history. One-week sessions are held at Francis Parker School's Thiemann Music Center, a state-of-the-art facility with dedicated classrooms and practice studios. Here, students grow musically as they learn to express themselves through the art of jazz improvisation. Students give a closing performance at the House of Blues®, one of San Diego's premier concert venues. We welcome beginning, intermediate and advanced students at this hands-on workshop designed to nurture their growth as musicians, technically and creatively. The workshop is officially in full-swing! The 26th Annual San Diego Music Awards will take place at House of BluesTONIGHT! Doors open at 6PM, with a pre-show TV taping of Tonight in San Diego! Proceeds from the San Diego Music Awards help to purchase guitars for San Diego County schools, via a partnership between the San Diego Music Foundation and El Cajon's Taylor Guitars. Over the life of the program, 2,978 guitars have been placed into 85 schools from San Onofre to San Ysidro and over 55,000 K-12 students have been impacted by the program. San Diego's Jazz 88.3 celebrated 100 years of recorded jazz (2/26). Back, in 1917, The Original Dixieland Jass Band cut two sides for the Victor Recording Label. Since then we have been blessed with hundreds of quintessential jazz recordings. We aired our Top 100 Jazz Recordings (voted on by the KSDS listeners) to celebrate this historic date. The concert will be TONIGHTat 8pm and it will feature saxophonist and the world's foremost expert on Tadd Dameron, Paul Combs. His quintet along with special guest, pianist Bill Cunliffe will be playing Tadd's compositions all night long for this very special evening of music.
