Holly Hofmann's jazz series continues this month at Tio Leo's Restaurant and Lounge at 5302 Napa St. at Morena Blvd. Jazz at Tio Leo's is happening every Sunday evening from 5-7pm and features Southern California's finest jazz musicians in a quiet, spacious setting with full bar and Mexican cuisine.   • Charlie Barnet's band recorded "Cherokee" for Bluebird Records in 1939.
  • Three years later, Barnet recorded "Old Black Magic", "Oh Miss Jaxson" and "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" for Decca.
  • George Shearing's Quintet cut the "Lullaby of Birdland" for MGM Records in 1952.
  • Also, the first Newport Jazz Festival took place on this day in 1954 in Newport, Rhode Island.
  • On a sad note, "Lady Day," the great Billie Holiday, died on this day in 1959. She was just 44 years old.
  • And, long-time Jazz 88 announcer and vocalist Peggy Claire, died of lung cancer on this day in 2006, in San Diego. She was 53.
