The iconic alto saxophonist Phil Woods has passed away. As a teen he studied with Lennie Tristano, got inspired by Charlie Parker, and toured the world with Dizzy Gillespie. Later, Buddy Rich, Quincy Jones, and Benny Goodman benefited from his creativity. Pop Culture reference: Phil Woods was the sax solo on Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are." Pianist Geoffrey Keezer and vocalist Gillian Margot are back in San Diego, playing two shows in September and October that promise to take the duo thing they have been working on to new places, literally. The two dropped into the Jazz 88.3 studios to chat with Vince Outlaw on The New Jazz Thing on Monday, September 14, 2015, bringing new, unreleased recordings they made to "give people an idea of what we do sound like when it's just the two of us" and chatting about the upcoming shows ("in the round" at Dizzy's on Thursday, September 17 and at The Glashaus with strings on October 13), how their working relationship has evolved, Gillian's time in Hong Kong before the release of this year's "Black Butterfly", and what else San Diego's own Geoffrey has been up to.

Just when you thought San Diego Jazz Hero Gilbert Castellanos had enough going on, what with his long-time Wednesday Jam sessions, curating the Summer Thursday evening Sunset Poolside Jazz at The Westgate Hotel, working magic at his Friday evening series at The Westgate's Plaza Bar, alongside touring and playing with just about everyone on the planet, he comes up with the What's Next...last week's announcement of his appointment as the Series Curator for the Inaugural Season of the San Diego Symphony's Jazz @ The Jacob's, the recent move of his Young Lion's series to Panama 66 in Balboa Park, the new school year as Artistic Director with Jazz 88.3 Education Partner International Academy of Jazz San Diego (IAJSD), and a Saturday, August 29 collaboration with Joshua White in Tribute to Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard. San Diego Jazz Musician, Composer, Bandleader, Educator, and Innovator Mark Dresser has been named as one of 20 recipients of the Doris Duke Impact Awards for 2015, receiving $80,000 to be used over 3 years as he wishes. Since April 2014, the foundation has awarded a total of $3.2 million in Impact Awards to 40 artists in the fields of jazz, dance and theatre. The Doris Duke Impact Award, in particular, has a unique nomination process, as explained by Ben Cameron, program director for the arts at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, "The Doris Duke Impact Awards are based on nominations submitted by artists, identifying others (often less widely known) that will have enormous impact on the jazz, dance or theatre fields in the future.

Dresser’s reaction to the award, as captured by Robert Bush, San Diego Jazz Writer, in an NBC San Diego Blog Post, "I felt gratified being recognized by this organization and it’s especially meaningful to know that I was chosen by a panel made up of distinguished but unknown colleagues in the field. I’m still trying to get a handle on the implications of such a significant financial prize attached and continuing to figure out what that could mean in realizing my music on a more dimensional level."

The Jazz Journalists Association (JJA, JazzJournalists.org) celebrated the winners of their 2015 Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards at the organization's annual public Jazz Awards party at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City on Tuesday, June 16, 2015. The 2015 JJA Awards For Musical Achievement were chosen in 32 categories for achievement in work in 2014 and were previously announced in May 2015. 2015 JJA Jazz Awards for Journalism and Media were announced at the event on Tuesday. Additionally, 23 previously announced 2015 Jazz Journalist Award Jazz Heroes were celebrated at the party.

Ornette Coleman passed away on June 11, 2015. He was a composer and he played saxophone, trumpet, and violin. He is considered influential across all creative genres and In All Languages, as he titled a 1987 release. He will from here on be celebrated and remembered by those looking ahead to unlock musical secrets to intrigue us and enhance our lives.

Word came to Jazz 88.3 via Facebook from San Diego Jazz trumpter, band leader, educator, and entrepreneur Gilbert Castellanos...

Hello family & friends, I am sad to say that the month of June will be the last month for the Young Lions series at Croce's Park West. I want to thank the people who came out on Wednesday nights to support the young musicians. I am proud of the young talented musicians for the work they put into promoting their night, preparing and rehearsing music for their sets, and showing true professionalism on stage. This is really where my passion and heart and soul is, watching these young adults blossom into amazing musicians! I also want to thank Ingrid Croce and Jimmy Rock for giving us a home to perform for the last 16 months. I DO NOT want this to be the end of the young lion series! It's crucial that we keep this going for the future of jazz in San Diego! As of today, I am searching for a new home for the series! I would love to get the program back on it's feet by July! Please feel free to inbox me if you would like to share your thoughts/suggestions!

Gilbert estimates that there have been over 200 young musicians that have played for the series, with 80% of them still in high school. The evening usually draws a big crowd with standing room only being not uncommon. Gilbert's goal is to "find a venue that can guarantee the young musicians a fee" in order to keep the evening free and "really pack the joint!" According to Gilbert, the lions have been doing a "great job" promoting their nights on the bandstand.

Jazz 88.3 is helping to get this search underway with this blog post, but this is an opportunity that will take the community of business leaders, art directors and presenters, music educators to move forward AND ESPECIALLY the support of Jazz, Music, Education, and Art Lovers and Supporters dedicating themselves to go and see and hear and exhort The Future of Jazz forward to do as Gilbert says, KEEP JAZZ ALIVE, at whatever home these Young Lions find next.

Blues legend B.B. King passed away in his sleep on Thursday, May 14. B.B. was a nickname for "Blues Boy" and he definitely lived up to that monicker. B.B.'s playing style was so straight-forward yet so unique with his signature vibrato. He was quoted as saying "I wanted to connect my guitar to human emotions." As a frequent visitor of San Diego B.B. enjoyed playing venues like the Belly Up and House of Blues. He also was involved in charity work in San Diego as an ambassador for Photocharity, a non-profit that houses homeless youth. He would autograph guitars (that looked similar to his 'Lucille') and othe memorabilia that would be auctioned off for the benefit of the charity. His smile was infectious and his appeal crossed over many generations and genres of music. Rest in peace King.

B.B. King, an icon and world wide ambassador for the Blues, has passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 9:40pm in his sleep at his home in Las Vegas, the San Diego UT is reporting in a long and heart-felt remembrance by George Varga, who had written about B. B.'s many trips to San Diego. "The thrill is gone for millions of music fans around the world", he begins, using the title from a signature piece from King's over 6 decade career in music. One of the best things I find out in the interviews I have the honor of doing on The New Jazz Thing or as part of Jazz Live San Diego, or just in talking with Jazz and music lovers I come across is the influence of their family and upbringing on what they love as their passion and/or do as their livelihood. And while having a talented Jazz Mom may give you a little step-up in following in her footsteps, there are many other ways that our parents, and Mom's in particular as we head toward Mother's Day 2015, have put us on the path toward the music we love and play and listen to day in and day out. My Mom, in particular, made sure that we listened to big string orchestrated music which I think directly led to my liking of both small ensembles with strings and to the complexity that can come with large ensemble Jazz music.

This wide range of music will be explored through presentation by Chris and the music of Justo Almario, who was among several Colombian musicians recruited by Mongo Santamaria for his band in the 1970s, notably on the album, Afro–Indio (1975). To join in International Jazz Day Celebrations on this Thursday, April 30, 2015, and on the eve of our launch of the 2015 Music Matters Instrument Drive collection program, part of The Future of Jazz initiative at San Diego's Jazz 88.3 Jazz88.org, we are hosting a guest blog post of The Top Jazz Artists of All Time, as compiled by the students and staff of Napoli School of Music and Dance near Philadelphia, PA.

Top Jazz Artists of All Time presented by Napoli School of Music and Dance and San Diego's Jazz 88.3

The students at Napoli learn about a wide variety of topics in the jazz realm, including scales, reading, theory, repertoire, and improvisation. Our jazz music lessons take our students through the greats, including Joplin and Gershwin. In preparation for Jazz Appreciation Month, the students were asked who some of their favorite artists were, then the staff worked to put it all together into the first Jazz 88.3 Guest Blog Post...at least that I know of ;) Jazz 88 has taken the YouTube video's selected by Napoli as illustrating each of the artists repertoire and put them into a playlist on the Jazz 88.3 YouTube Channel (SUBSCRIBE!).

For the rest of the month of May, San Diegans can donate their used musical instruments to Jazz 88.3 and in turn, we will refurbish each instrument collected and distribute them among San Diego City School music programs. So dust off your old instrument(s) and swing by the Jazz 88.3 business office to drop 'em off (we're located in the L-Building on the City College campus) and help keep San Diego's youth musically-inspired!

San Diego’s Jazz 88.3 Jazz88.org has dedicated a gift from the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation to further the outreach of “Jazz An American Art Form” (JAAAF). JAAAF is a 45 minute presentation about the birth and development of Jazz and Blues, scaled for elementary and middle school students. JAAAF was created by San Diegan and world-renowned bassist, Rob Thorsen and features a world-class lineup of San Diego musicians including Gilbert Castellanos trumpet, Bob Boss guitar, and Richard Sellers drums. Working with Young Audiences of San Diego, who schedules and places a variety of enrichment programs for schools around the county, Jazz 88.3 underwrites a portion of the cost of JAAAF for Title I schools, schools that are often strapped financially.

Ella Fitzgerald and San Diego have long and deep ties, from her earliest appearances here in the late 1930’s at venues like the Mission Beach Ballroom and through her celebrated accompanists who lived here and still make San Diego home. And to keep the birthday celebration swinging, San Diego’s Jazz 88.3 on-air hosts share their thoughts on "Lady Ella" and will be curating some of their favorites tunes featuring the “Queen of Jazz” for you all day Saturday, April 25, the 98th Birthday of “The First Lady of Jazz” and in the weeks ahead.

Schulman Auditorium with a celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month with San Diego's 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition Finalist Joshua White and his Quartet and Jazz 88.3 host Vince Outlaw present "San Diego Jazz Legends and Young Lions".

San Diego Jazz has both a rich history and a currently thriving, invigorating and nationally recognized scene, or as San Diego Magazine recently characterized, “the renaissance of West Coast Jazz is happening right here and now." The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz says ""Women have participated on every instrument, in every style, and in every era of jazz history. Yet, with the notable exception of singers and a number of pianists, female jazz musicians have been continuously overlooked in the most prestigious areas of jazz practice, marketing, and documentation." Sue and Janine attempt to set the record straight with a program illustrating, through both music and words, the contribution of women in Jazz from pre-1920's through today.

The Jazz World is honoring the life of one of the greats today at the news of the passing of Jazz Trumpter, Educator, Mentor and more, Clark Terry. His wife Gwen Terry made the following announcement on his website on Saturday evening,

"Our beloved Clark Terry has joined the big band in heaven where he’ll be singing and playing with the angels. He left us peacefully, surrounded by his family, students and friends. Clark has known and played with so many amazing people in his life. He has found great joy in his friendships and his greatest passion was spending time with his students. We will miss him every minute of every day, but he will live on through the beautiful music and positivity that he gave to the world. Clark will live in our hearts forever.

With all my love, Gwen Terry"

This is Jazz! 2015, a partnership between the City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office and San Diego's Jazz 88.3, kick off the 2015 series with "International Songs of Love" with vocalist Allison Adams Tucker and Jazz 88.3 Monday Evening Jazz host Jeff Dalrymple ever-so appropriately on Valentines Day, Saturday, Februrary 14, 2015 at 4PM in Carlsbad City Library's Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium.

This first in a series of 4 programs is on Valentine’s Day and spotlights love songs from around the world. Allison Adams Tucker brings her jazz quartet to the library and Jazz 88 radio host Jeff Dalrymple narrates. Listen as Allison sings songs from the different stages of love! Early love, fickle love, being in love, breakup love! Allison has chosen some great standards, some contemporary songs and all will get the full jazz treatment. Also, since she sings in many languages, we will find out about love songs from other countries and cultures.

Kei Akagi:

Pianist and composer, Kei Akagi, has been a mainstay of the international jazz world for over two decades. Perhaps best known for his work as a member of the Miles Davis band in the late 1980's, his career also includes extended associations with major figures such as Stanley Turrentine, James Newton, Joe Farrell, Al DiMeola, and Airto Moreira.

San Diego's Chase Morrin was awarded the Jazz Education Network's (JEN) 2015 Student Composition Showcase winner at JEN's January 7-10, 2015 conference at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. His composition "Three Brahmin" was one of 4 works chosen by a panel of 4 adjudicators from 24 submissions and was performed at the conference by the world-renowed, Washington D.C.-based Alan Blaylock Orchestra. Chase is no newcomer to awards, especially since he had a small combo composition win at the 2012 JEN conference! The JEN Student Composition Showcase, designed to spotlight young jazz composers, gives students an opportunity to have an original composition recognized and performed at the International level. The winners of the 2015 competition also had the newly added benefit of a private mentoring session with a leader in the Jazz field. Chase's reaction to the award,

"This year was especially exciting and different than the 2012 JEN, first, because my big band chart won apposed to a small combo piece. This meant Alan's Orchestra played my piece which was a real privilege. Second, this year they paired the composers with mentors to chat about music, the future, etc. I was paired with Ellen Rowe. She was incredibly kind and gave me some great advice. I really enjoyed talking with her. "

Before heading back to continue his studies at Harvard, Chase will be performing at Dizzy's San Diego TONIGHT, Friday, 1/16 at 8pm with the trio he performed with during a separate session at the JEN conference, including Justin Grinnell bass and Charlie Weller drums.

San Diego's Jazz 88.3 extends an America's Finest City welcome to The Jazz Education Network and their 2015 Conference at the Manchester Grand Hyatt starting TODAY, Wednesday, January 7, 2015 and going through the late evening hours of Saturday, January 10, 2015 (and you know those late Jazz Jam session will run into early Sunday)! CJ88: I became a Charger in 1960 when the team moved here after 1 year in LA. My Dad, Barry Farrar, Sr. played sax in the Charger band. He was a single parent raising 2 boys. He would bring me to the games...his gigs.

Jazz 88.3 is sooo proud of the on-air hosts that bring Jazz to Life for us all each day by hand-picking the Jazz we hear and providing it to us with their added thoughts, feelings, and experiences that have come from many years in the music. Gary Beck is one those hosts, bringing you Morning Jazz each weekday from 9AM to Noon PT. Gary is celebrating his 40th year with Jazz 88 and San Diego City College and we couldn't be prouder and happier for him!

Gary was recently featured in the San Diego Reader article "Back Where I Started" by Dave Good, and sums up his approach and outlook on Jazz,

"...I love the music. I like the jazz classics, but I also like what’s going on now musically. The standards have already been done, and they’ve been done by the best. Now, I look for the singers that are doing something different. And musicians,” he says, “that aren’t bored and that still play with the same intensity as they did when I was 18.”

You can tell the special feel that Gary has for Jazz Singers in this June 2013 interview with Roberta Donnay (MP3).

Jazz 88.3 is proud to support the International Academy of Jazz-San Diego - a 501c3, non-profit, and the first, and only, September-May after-school instrumental and vocal Jazz program for kids! The IAJ-SD will kick-off the 2014 season THIS Saturday, September 27th at Grossmont College at 10AM. This event is open to the public and will be both an initiation event for currently registered students, as well as an informational event for kids and their parents who are interested in the program and are not yet registered. Light refreshments will also be served. So come out and show your support and help keep San Diego kids musically-inspired!

The last few week's have provided major blows for Jazz. We lost one of our very own here in San Diego (Daniel Jackson) but also Gerald Wilson and Joe Sample. These men were integral to the art form as composers and arrangers. Their trumpet and piano, respectively, lent to the honest voice of jazz music. For Gerald, it began in the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra in 1939 when he replaced the star trumpeter in the group at the time (Sy Oliver). Joe's contribution started in hard bop and grew into many different styles of playing. Both men led bands and forged new roads. Their music and jazz history will preserve forever.

San Diego Blues Festival founder and music writer Michael Kinsman has begun hosting “Every Shade of Blue” Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to midnight. You can hear his first show by clicking this link and in the future all shows will be in the Speakeasy. Jazz 88.3 will be hanging out at the San Diego Blues Festival, a benefit for the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank, Today (Sunday) at the Embarcadero Marina Park North. This year, come out and groove to 18-acts, including Eric Burdon & the Animals, Elvin Bishop, Tommy Castro & the Painkilllers, Blues Hall of Famer, Lazy Lester and more. In San Diego County, 462,000 people live in poverty and face “food insecurity” which means that little or no food is available at home and they often will not know where they will get their next meal. With that being said, the mission of the San Diego Blues Festival is to provide great blues music at an affordable price and raise money to support the battle against hunger in our community. So come out and hang out for a good cause! We'll see you there!

Well, well, lucky me. I happen to tune in to one of the best darn Blues shows in the world. T's 'Every Shade of Blue'. And there it is, pure gold. Harmonica John and Bud Lite are wailing away in the studio prompting the blues ringmaster to belt out along with them, and wouldn't ya know, T's got pipes! Thanks to Harmonica John and Bud Lite for coming to the station. They are promoting Spring Harp Fest this weekend in La Mesa. All the proceeds (after expenses) goes to 'Blues in the Schools', a program that teaches the kids about Blues music. Please stop by the event to hear some great music and buy a beverage (or two) to support the cause. Here's the Information.

House of Blues, in partnership with Francis Parker School, presents the 4th Annual 2014 Jazz 88.3 Summer Jazz Workshop! The workshop is open to middle school and high school students and will offer (two) 1-week sessions (July 14th-26th) at Francis Parker School. The program includes lessons in performance, improvisation, theory and music history. Students will also perform at the House of Blues at the end of the workshop, too! The duo of Gilbert Castellanos and Charles McPherson was electrifying, with Carlos Vasquez on percussion, Marshall Hawkins on bass and Mikan Zlatkovich on the keyboard.

I attended the celebration for Gary Lefebvre at 98 Bottles on Sunday and quite a celebration it was! The room was packed, the music outstanding and the crowd was immensely responsive as the parade of musicians lit it up with fabulous Jazz.

There's a bit of a bug that we are working on for the Internet Explorer Browser for the Jazz 88 site. You may notice that the drop down menus are not working properly. We need a little more time to work it all out but in the meantime you can help things move along a bit better by adjusting your settings. If you are on IE 10 please look at this diagram. Please find that item on your browser and click it. The browser should refresh and then the menu items should work as they are supposed to.

Jazz 88.3 has a heavy heart for losing another icon in jazz this past week - pianist Marion McPartland. NPR noted her for her individualistic voice in her compositions and the New York Times highlighted her formidable success as a jazz musician in late 1940s and 1950s as a woman, additionally also as a spokeswoman for the music. NPR honors her with some of her compositions, as featured in her longtime radio show on public radio, Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz.

We’re now into Black History Month in the U.S. Live theaters, concert venues, libraries, lecturer series, even some television networks are celebrating this February with a host of special programming or features. Special. As in, “we don’t usually do this.” That’s where Jazz 88.3 comes in. We celebrate Black History every day. It’s true, we don’t do a lot of feature programming for this national celebration. But, each day we note the musicians who have made jazz and blues what it is today… and what it is becoming for the future.

It seems fitting to me Dave Brubeck died on the way to his cardiologist, on his way to have that great heart of his checked out. It was that great heart that hit its final downbeat today, the day before Dave's 92nd birthday. As the news continues to sink in and I continue think about the incredible person that was Dave Brubeck, I keep going back to that heart. His powerful heart that beat for nearly 92 solid years after his parents welcomed him in Concord, California.

Joe Marillo has been a force in the San Diego jazz scene since the mid-1970s when he began bringing top-name jazz musicians to Mission Beach's Catamaran Hotel. He's a fine tenor sax player in his own right and, as a teacher, Joe has helped many an aspiring jazz player learn the rudiments of the music. Now 80, Joe's brings a lot of things to the table, but his most important asset is the size of his heart. It's huge. Joe Marillo recently sat down with Offramp's host T. Michael Crowell to talk about his life in music.

An interesting partnership this summer between a music venue and a private school has resulted in a summer jazz program for tween and teen jazz musicians.

Howard Berkson, owner of the food and music club Anthology here in San Diego, got the idea last year for a jazz institute and, with the help of San Diego trumpeter and educator Derek Cannon, put together a great music faculty, outlined a curriculum and set up a whole jazz program. Local top-shelf musicians were enlisted as the teaching staff, most or all of whom are music educators as well. I’m talking about — in addition to Cannon — Mike Holguin, Justin and Melonie Grinnell, Danny Green, Steve and Ella Steinberg, Andy Geib and Tommy Collins. In addition to these instrumentalists, Melonie Grinnell and Leonard Patton took charge of the two jazz singing groups.

What an honor it is to have the great Jazz Drummer Louis Hayes on the Seville Theatre stage at San Diego City College for Jazz Live San Diego, Tuesday May 10, 2011 8 to 10 PM PT. To understand a little of the importance of tonight, Louis Hayes at age 18 replaced Art Blakey in Horace Silver's quintet when Hard Bop and Funk Bop and Soul Jazz were making a audience-centric directional turn from the BeBop era (with more experimental, exploratory, artist-centric, turns being made by Trace, Cecil, Ornette, and others). Louis was right there at this nexus. He played with Cannonball Adderly's Quintet on what has been called the first "soul-jazz" album, "The Cannonball Adderly Quintet Live in San Francisco" (which ushered in it's own era of music and live, audience-included, recording). Pianist Henry Butler will be our guest for a unique solo piano show for our next Jazz Live San Diego, Tuesday, April 12, 2011.

Henry's Bio on his website.: An eight-time W.C. Handy �Best Blues Instrumentalist - Piano� award nominee, Henry Butler knows no limitations. Although blinded by glaucoma since birth, Butler is also a world class photographer with his work displayed at exhibitions throughout the United States. Playing piano since the age of six, Butler is a master of musical diversity. Combining the percussive jazz piano playing of McCoy Tyner and the New Orleans style playing of Professor Longhair through his classically trained wizardry, Butler continues to craft a sound uniquely his own. A rich amalgam of jazz, Caribbean, classical, pop, blues and R&B influences, his music is as excitingly eclectic as that of his New Orleans birthplace.

Preview Tune: Orleans Inspiration from Orleans Inspiration (1990)

Mastering baritone horn, valve trombone and drums, in addition to the piano, at the Louisiana State School for the Blind in Baton Rouge, as a youngster, Butler began formal vocal training in the eleventh grade. He went on to sing German lieder, French and Italian art songs and operatic arias at Southern and Michigan State Universities, earning a Masters degree in vocal music. He has taught music workshops throughout the country and initiated a number of different educational projects, including a residential jazz camp at Missouri State School for the Blind and a program for blind and visually impaired students at the University of New Orleans.

Mentored by influential jazz clarinetist and Michigan State University teacher Alvin Batiste, Butler was encouraged to explore Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and other Caribbean music. With Batiste�s help, he successfully applied for National Endowment for the Arts grants to study with keyboard players George Duke, then with Cannonball Adderley�s Quintet, and the late Sir Roland Hanna. He studied with Harold Mabern, pianist for the late Lee Morgan, for a summer and spent a long afternoon studying with Professor Longhair.

9:24 Tune 13 "Down Home Feelin": She needs a break, but is gutting it out! Heading down to close it out!

I will be heading down soon to say good night to our studio audience and getting things ready for a Henry Butler preview of our April 12, 2011 Jazz Live San Diego! But I think they will be doing one more tune after this, so I'll hang tight!

9:17 Tune 12 "Exposure". Another from Check The Box, which tonight's pianist Luis Perdomo plays on. She's really working the set list tonight!

9:11 Tune 11 "Five More Days". Mid-tempo tune, starting out with Rebecca doing another vocal.

She talks a bit about being a West Coast girl that went to NY, but loving San Diego and playing Frisbee at the beach today.

9:04 Back in the perch, after the station ID and a chat about trying out new stuff in front of an audience and the change it might undergo.

Tune 10 "Regrets": Another new tune. She explained is as very improvisational, like a improve painting. With a little structure that she has built for it. Feels like she is trying out a different kind of composition. And this is just a trio, Perdomo piano, Camacho bass, Franks trumpet.

Tune 9 "Mass" (before the break): Another tune from 2009's Check The Box. Boy it sure swang hard!

8:42 Tune 7 "3/4": She said she didn't know what time it was and someone from the crowd yelled "8:42". She said "Time flies when you are having fun!". I hope she has enough tunes to get the full 90 minutes in...I'm sure she does!!

8:35 Tune 6 Hugs From Heaven. A tune written for her father who passed away about a year ago. Rebecca sings for the first time tonight. Before the tune, as there was a little dead air for you at home on the radio, she came back and explained: "A little out of order...which isn't too strange for me" (a little paraphrase, but you get the very humble idea!).

8:29 Tune 5 Genetic Makeup. Another tune written in the last couple of months. Never recorded. Probably played live very few times....nice! Swinging tune, with Luis Perdomo taking a really nice turn on piano! Also, Rene Camacho did it up..and the crowd loved it!

We are soooo lucky to be hearing lots of previously unheard, new music from Rebecca...she is hoping to record this in June 2011.

8:22: Rebecca introduces the band. Just met Andy a couple gigs ago. Luis Perdomo, piano, played on her "Check The Box" disc from 2009.
Tune 4: "Open Heart". Ballad.

8:16 Tune 3 - Movin' On. To commemorate quitting her college teaching gig and deciding to play full time! Great choice! Nice solo by drummer Andy Sanesi!!

8:08 Back in the perch after opening the show, the first tune was a nice shuffle with RCF really blowing it away! She must have been a little inspired by the Kermit Ruffins that Barry Farrar played right before he tossed it to us in the theatre. Tune 2 is a sweet bossa-ish swinger.

9:23 Tune 11 <a blues shouter> They didn't say this was the end, but it sure looks like it based on the time...heading downstairs....

Looks like this will be the tune before the last one...then it's down for the close and onto the rest of the show...

9:14 Tune 10 "Theme from Pink Panther" Plas Johnson plays on the tune that made him famous...you knew he recorded the famous saxophone solo on this tune, right?!

9:07 Tune 9 "Delilah" featuring pianist Art Hillary. Richard Reid is really growly playing the bass...his microphone pickup on the bass really picks him up...sounds great! Everyone's taking a turn on this one...Garryck King on drums just did a nice thing with mallets...I think.

9:01 Tune 8 "Drink Muddy Water" with Red taking the lead on vocals and letting the theatre audience get a few responses in to his calls. The band swings.

8:58 Station ID Break and Q&A: We heard stories about Red and Plas' time in the Army. Red as a bandleader, after doing a stint in the motor pool and 'red lining' his pay...I guess that means he didn't take his pay for some reason. Plas was happy to be done with his time!

Time for me to figure out what we are going to banter and babble about at the 9PM station ID break.

8:47 Tune 7 "Caravan" Red sings the lyric to remember the name of the tune...featuring Garryck King on the buckets.

8:38 Tune 6 "Talk of the Town" Nice ballad choice. Again, Plas calling the tunes as he sees them from the stage. And his buddy Red is hanging right there with the band on stage...bet he wishes he was playing side by side with Plas (they talked about this in the pre-recorded interview).

8:31 Tune 5 "I Feel Good" A little James Brown being pulled out of the hat by Plas. The crowd is loving it!

8:25 Tune 4 "Yes, Yes" - Red does some magic rhyming 'pass' with 'yes'.

Red schmoozing the fine ladies with a tune he just wrote...I think I know the title...I cleared this for on-air...we'll see if I regret that decision!

8:17 Tune 3 "Hittin The Jug" - Plas wailing on a slow blues, after deciding what they were going to play. Looks like there isn't a set list for tonight's festivities!

8:10 Tune 2 <some title> Red Holloway leads the packed Seville Theatre in a blues sing-a-long.

8:01 Tune 1 "Lucky So and So" We didn't quite hit the 8:00 mark with the first tune, so I wonder what the 'toss' sounded like...the end of Tune 0 and then we went right into the show...LIVE radio with Jazz Legends at it's most unpredictable!

7: 56 Tune 0 "My Shining Hour" Supposed to be for the theatre only, as a last mix check for broadcast...but they didn't quite finish before the 8:00 toss from the studio, so I'm sure the radio audience heard the end of it, with my "LIVE from the Seville Theatre..." opener.

Patience is not one of my virtues. An ability to accessorize? Sure. But to say I've been "patiently" waiting for the day when we could finally get the Jazz88.3 blog up and running wouldn't be a correct characterization. Foaming at the mouth? Maybe. Pestering webguy Michael incessantly? Yes.

When you work at a non-profit, patience is a must. Things just don't happen as quickly as you want them to, whether it's from lack of funds, lack of staffing, or any number of bureaucratic loopholes. We've been working to improve our website for quite some time now, and an ongoing blog has been one of the key components. As an avid blogger in my personal life, I couldn't wait to connect with Jazz88.3 fans in a way that allows them to see the a bit behind-the-scenes. I'm thrilled the blog is finally here, with many more exciting web developments to come!

2010 has already started off with a bang at Jazz88.3. Next week Henry "The Skipper" Franklin comes to Jazz Live, and we couldn't be more delighted. He was here a few years back, played to a sold out crowd, and went down as one of the best shows we've ever had.

In the Development Office, we're pursuing grants to help bolster our education initiatives in the community, we're working on informing our listeners about the Hope Shaw Legacy Society (a way to make a planned estate gift to KSDS), and we're getting ready for a very fun event at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts for our Leadership Circle--starring Ed Asner!

The Membership Department is eagerly planning the Spring Membership Campaign, and continues to strive to make it a time of year that doesn't elicit groans but rather begs the question "what interesting twists will they come up with next?"

But now, I've gotta skedoodle and get to writing this week's edition of The Speakeasy! See you next time!

Since I'm not a professional writer it's easy to dismiss anything I might type about Thelonious Monk. I have no particular insight into his career or his life. Nothing to reveal about "'Round Midnight" or his singular style on piano. Instead of typing, let me try telepathy.

I'm not going to tell you that you're going to love Monk's music. Maybe you've already made up your mind. Do a quick personal inventory. See if there's a little room for something fun and serious, something surprising and traditional. Go ahead, give it a shot.

With a computer it's easy to dig in. Spell it right the first time, "Thelonious Monk." Then listen, especially the solo stuff. Read some of the history or stories about Monk. Watch a documentary. At least watch until you find the scene on a bus in Copenhagen, I think, when Johnny Griffin shows his new pants to Monk. So worth it.

Things are looking up for the Jazz88 Speakeasy. What once started as an idea is starting to bear some fruit. Our fearless Web Designer, Gil and our Web Master, Lev are putting all the pieces together for a fun, interactive and original Jazz88 Speakeasy. Not only will it look cool it will feature such content like: Artist Interviews, Jock Bios, Samples of original KSDS programs including full-length programming, Jazz Birthdays, the Jazz88 Blog, Videos, Jazz Live Gallery, A connection for the 'In-Crowd' Members and much much more.
