Jazz 88.3 is proud to support the production of Forever Plaid--one of the most popular and successful musicals in recent memory. The show takes place at the newly reopened Welk Resorts Theatre in Escondido. This deliciously fun revue is chock-full of classic barbershop quartet harmonies and pitch-perfect melodies! Once upon a time, there were four guys (Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie) who discovered that they shared a love for music and then got together to become their idols- The Four Freshman, The Hi-Lo’s and The Crew Cuts. On the way to their first big gig, the “Plaids” are broadsided by a school bus and killed instantly.  It is at the moment when their careers and lives end that the story of Forever Plaid begins…. Singing in close harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography with overzealous precision, the “Plaids” are a guaranteed smash, with a program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles when they are not humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950s. This is one musical you simply won't want to miss! The show runs now through this Sunday, August 26th! To purchase tickets, click here

Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary

Blog Name:Home Page News

Blog Author:

Posted on:June 13, 2017

Jazz 88.3 is proud to support Ken Theater's presentation of "Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary" showing THIS(!) Saturday, June 24th. You won't want to miss this thought-provoking, uplifting and powerful film about jazz giant John Coltrane, an outside-the-box thinker whose boundary-shattering music continues to impact and influence people around the world. This rich, textured and compelling portrait of a remarkable artist reveals the critical events, passions, experiences and challenges that shaped his life and revolutionary sounds—a story of demons and darkness, of persistence and redemption. The beauty, poignancy, energy, pain, joy and inspiration heard in nearly 50 Coltrane recordings from throughout his career brings alive the artist and the times in which he lived. Although Coltrane never participated in any television interviews (and only a handful for radio), he has an active and vibrant presence in the film through his print interviews. These words—spoken by Academy Award winner Denzel Washington—illuminate what Coltrane was thinking and feeling at critical moments throughout his life and career. Includes appearances by Coltrane’s children, President Bill Clinton, Common, John Densmore of The Doors, Wynton Marsalis, Sonny Rollins, Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter, Dr. Cornel West and more. Mark your calendars because The Bad Plus will hit the Music Box stage, Monday, May 1st at 8PM! The Bad Plus is a collective made up of bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King. All three are from the Midwest and they have known each other since their teens. Nonetheless, with the exception of one unimpressive meeting in 1990, it is only after spending their formative 20s apart -- King as a session player in Los Angeles, Iverson as the musical director for the Mark Morris Dance Group, Anderson as a prominent up-and-coming player on the New York jazz scene -- that they reunited in late 2000 to play a weekend club date in Minneapolis. The chemistry was immediate and obvious. They planned a second gig and a one-day recording session for the indie jazz label Fresh Sound and The Bad Plus was born! To purchase tickets, click here!

Peter Sprague will kick off his Sanctuary Suite, TONIGHT at 7PM at the Oceanside Museum of Art! It's your chance to take a trek into the soundscape explorations of world music-inspired jazz! Sprague’s Sanctuary Suite is a newly commissioned piece by Camarada that's grounded in the rich and diverse music of refugees who have found their haven in San Diego. The pure African 6/8 rhythm of Uluwatu sonically expresses the epic waves of this legendary region of Bali. Further global expedition leads the listener to a South American samba, Voltar Para Casa, which conjures up a vision of “riding in the back of a pickup truck on a Brazilian country road, heading back home through the jungle.” Happily expressing Peter’s music is Camarada’s own jazz quintet – Peter Sprague (guitar), Fred Benedetti (guitar), Beth Ross Buckley (flute), Gunnar Biggs (bass) & Duncan Moore (percussion). Camarada now invites you to find your sanctuary in this suite of music. To purchase tickets, click here!

Every time you experience a live performance of Jazz, it’s an original. At Jazz 88.3, we like that originality. We are celebrating with a campaign to end our fiscal year on budget with some other San Diego originals. We’ve partnered with Rubio’s and Blind Lady Ale House, Tiger! Tiger! and Panama 66, for example, to thank donors who help us keep that fiscal needle in the  black with some tasty original San Diego gastronomic experiences. And we’ve culled some original audio experiences, too, including a new CD from Sue Palmer that hasn’t even been released yet!
Take a moment and go to our “Support Jazz 88.3 page, and consider which San Diego Original you’d like to add to your collection.

B.B. King- 1925-2015

Posted on:May 15, 2015

Blues legend B.B. King passed away in his sleep on Thursday, May 14. B.B. was a nickname for "Blues Boy" and he definitely lived up to that monicker. B.B.'s playing style was so straight-forward yet so unique with his signature vibrato. He was quoted as saying "I wanted to connect my guitar to human emotions." As a frequent visitor of San Diego B.B. enjoyed playing venues like the Belly Up and House of Blues. He also was involved in charity work in San Diego as an ambassador for Photocharity, a non-profit that houses homeless youth. He would autograph guitars (that looked similar to his 'Lucille') and othe memorabilia that would be auctioned off for the benefit of the charity. His smile was infectious and his appeal crossed over many generations and genres of music. Rest in peace King.

3 Giant Losses for the Art Form, Daniel, Gerald and Joe

The last few week's have provided major blows for Jazz.  We lost one of our very own here in San Diego (Daniel Jackson) but also Gerald Wilson and Joe Sample.  These men were integral to the art form as composers and arrangers.  Their trumpet and piano, respectively, lent to the honest voice of jazz music.  For Gerald, it began in the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra in 1939 when he replaced the star trumpeter in the group at the time (Sy Oliver). Joe's contribution started in hard bop and grew into many different styles of playing. Both men led bands and forged new roads. Their music and jazz history will preserve forever.

There's a bit of a bug that we are working on for the Internet Explorer Browser for the Jazz 88 site.  You may notice that the drop down menus are not working properly.  We need a little more time to work it all out but in the meantime you can help things move along a bit better by adjusting your settings.  If you are on IE 10 please look at this diagram. Please find that item on your browser and click it.  The browser should refresh and then the menu items should work as they are supposed to.
